TEMPTATIVA COL·LECTIVA

COLLECTIVE ATTEMPT

CAN SERRAT / 4-10 SETEMBRE 2022

INTRODUCTION

This program is the result of a series of circumstances that for the past three years have been developing.

I first met some of the artists in residency at Can Serrat in 2019 and became interested in how their work, as diverse as it was, was looking to connect with the surroundings of the house. Through sounds, plants, bacteria, temperature systems, food, symbols or poetry, they were enacting the inter-relations between human and no-human, culture and nature, that blurred borders and limits demonstrating how we are in a process of constant formation, open-ended and uncertain.

This came at a moment when I was interested in performativity as an on-going dimension of co-definition, where material and living entities, bodies and objects, performers and props, were reciprocally engaged forming hybrids that challenged an individualistic view of the world. Of course, the climate emergency and the intrinsic violence of a system based on exploitation and extraction, were already underlining the need to emancipate artistic practices from neoliberal agendas, attuning them to an experimental correspondence between the cultural and the ecological. Thus, instead of searching for an end result, a well-defined product, that achieves the expected formal and conceptual premises of a specific trend, the attention to processes motivates a sense of in-conclusion, on-going-ness, akin to how we are, unfinished, becoming, vibrantly forming ourselves in a close contact of bodies and things.

During the lockdown in Spain, I was fascinated and terrified by how “it, the virus”, an entity at the edge of life, was able to disrupt the order of things, pushing governments to take control of private sectors, freeing cities from cars, and imposing silence on the streets. Now, we know, that in reality, we were barricaded at home buying on amazon like maniacs, making the virus become an accelerator of inequalities. While this bunker-ization of society has brought us a context of suspicion and aggressivity, where the other is a biological weapon ready to destroy the micro-stability of our households, like the virus, we are mutating. All of this became part of an exhibition I curated last year.

Today, as we live again “the hottest summer in history,” we see how social and ecological turbulences spread around the US and Europe ending with Western exceptionalism and situating us at the verge of collapse. In light of this, how can we open up artistic practices and look for collaborations as modes of finding a collectivity that is undefined, temporal, unsteady, yet capable of amplifying a sense of togetherness? How can we, in the midst of everything, create spaces of conviviality?
